When you think of getting away, do you want to experience any of these things? Beautiful beaches, vibrant city life, historical sites, amazing food, a unique art scene, and beautiful places to relax and rejuvenate. If you answered yes to any of these, then you need to visit Tunisia right now. I’m not just saying that either! After my last visit, I’m more certain than ever that this is a fantastic country to visit.
Tunisia offers an incredible blend of attractions that cater to every type of traveler. Its pristine Mediterranean beaches provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation and adventure, while the bustling cities like Tunis are rich with culture and history. Wander through the ancient ruins of Carthage, savor the exquisite flavors of Tunisian cuisine, and immerse yourself in the vibrant local art scene.
Whether you’re looking to explore centuries-old historical sites or simply unwind in a serene oasis, Tunisia has it all. Let me share with you the reasons why this North African gem should be at the top of your travel list.
1. It’s Safe—Yes, Really!
If you’ve ever mentioned Tunisia as a travel destination, you’ve probably encountered concerns about safety. It’s a common misconception that Tunisia is not a safe place to visit, but let’s set the record straight. The fear surrounding Tunisia is often exaggerated, much like how Paris continues to attract tourists despite past tragedies. In my three visits over the past year, I have always felt safe and welcomed.
The reality is that Tunisia is a secure and inviting destination where you can explore with peace of mind. Much like any other travel experience, it’s essential to stay aware of your surroundings, but Tunisia’s warmth and hospitality make it a fantastic place to visit.
2. It’s Incredibly Affordable
One of the best reasons to visit Tunisia right now is the incredible value you’ll get for your money. With tourism at a low point, you can find amazing deals on everything from luxurious four and five-star hotels to delicious local cuisine. Prices are incredibly affordable, and your visit will help support the local economy and tourism industry. Think of it as a chance to experience the charm of a country that reminds me of Morocco back in 2004—a hidden gem waiting to be explored. From budget-friendly accommodations to bargain shopping, Tunisia offers a travel experience that won’t break the bank.
3. The People Are Warm and Welcoming
One of the most endearing aspects of Tunisia is the genuine warmth and hospitality of its people. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted with smiles and a sincere eagerness to share the beauty of their country with you. Although speaking a bit of Arabic can certainly enhance your experience, it’s not a necessity. The kindness and helpfulness of Tunisians transcend language barriers. During my travels, I found that locals were not only willing to help but were also genuinely interested in making sure I had the best possible experience. They are proud of their heritage and excited to showcase the rich culture and traditions that define Tunisia.
One of my most memorable experiences in Tunisia was at a guest house where I requested a traditional dinner. The hosts went above and beyond, preparing an exquisite meal and setting up a dining area on the rooftop, timed perfectly with the sunset and the adhan. This level of care and attention to detail is a testament to the Tunisian spirit of hospitality.
Throughout my stay, I encountered countless acts of kindness, from friendly chats with shopkeepers in the medina to spontaneous offers of tea and stories from locals. The genuine warmth and welcoming nature of the Tunisian people make every visitor feel like a treasured guest.
4. Beautiful Places to Stay
From charming hotels to beautifully restored homes, Tunisia offers a range of stunning accommodations. During my last trip, I stayed at Dar Ben Gacem in the heart of the medina, a place that perfectly encapsulates traditional Tunisian architecture and hospitality. The experience was akin to staying in a Moroccan riad, but with its own unique flair. The attentive staff ensured that every detail was taken care of, from airport transfers to preparing a delicious local dinner, making my stay both comfortable and memorable.
5. Insane Beaches
Tunisia’s beaches are nothing short of spectacular, offering a serene escape that rivals some of the most famous coastal destinations in the world. In Hammamet, the country’s main tourist hub, I was mesmerized by the crystal-clear waters and pristine sands. The beaches here are a perfect blend of natural beauty and tranquility, providing a relaxing atmosphere that’s often hard to find in more crowded tourist spots. If you’re planning a trip and wondering what to wear to the beach in Morocco, you’ll find similar stylish and comfortable options will work just as well here in Tunisia. Unlike many popular beach destinations, you’ll find plenty of space to spread out and unwind without the need to fight for a spot under the sun.
What makes these beaches even more appealing is the sense of safety and security. Tunisia has made significant efforts to ensure that visitors can enjoy their beach experiences without worry, with regular police patrols providing peace of mind. Beyond Hammamet, the Tunisian coastline is dotted with hidden gems waiting to be discovered, from the serene beaches of Djerba to the lively shores of Sousse.
Each beach offers its own unique charm and beauty, making Tunisia a dream destination for beach lovers. Whether you’re looking to soak up the sun, swim in crystal-clear waters, or simply enjoy the breathtaking views, Tunisia’s beaches are sure to leave a lasting impression.
6. A Rich, Diverse History
Tunisia is a treasure trove of historical and cultural wonders. Many people are unaware of North Africa’s rich past, and Tunisia’s history is a captivating journey through time. From its role in the Arab Spring to its ancient Berber roots, the country offers a deep and diverse historical experience. Explore the remnants of ancient Carthage, discover the influences of various dynasties, and immerse yourself in a culture that has evolved over millennia.
7. It’s Beautiful Beyond Words
There are those travel moments that take your breath away, and wandering through the medina of Tunis was one of those for me. The streets are filled with hidden gems and the feeling that you’ve discovered something truly special. The beauty of the city, combined with the serene experience of watching the sunset and hearing the call to prayer, created a surreal and unforgettable atmosphere.
Tunisia offers countless opportunities for exploration and discovery, both in its vibrant cities and tranquil landscapes.
8. The Food is Delightful
While Tunisia may not have the same culinary reputation as France or Italy, it certainly deserves recognition for its diverse and flavorful cuisine. From the spicy kick of harissa to fresh seafood and rich stews like the delicious Tunisian Tajine, Tunisian food offers a delightful array of tastes and textures. The country’s culinary scene reflects its diverse geography and history, offering a dining experience that’s both unique and satisfying. Come and taste the rich flavors of Tunisia’s cuisine, and you might just find yourself craving more.
Tunisia is a destination brimming with potential, and now is the perfect time to explore it. Whether you’re drawn by the stunning beaches, the warm hospitality, or the rich historical tapestry, this country has something for everyone. Pack your bags and get ready for an adventure—Tunisia is waiting for you!

Hi - I wrote this article two years ago and from what local friends tell me things have stayed very stable. I wouldn't hesitate to return and bring my children, though I'd likely avoid the border areas near Libya.
