One of the questions I get asked a lot is, “What should men wear in Morocco?” It’s not always easy to know what’s appropriate, what’s comfortable, and how to make sure you’re not packing too much for your trip. Knowing what to pack for Morocco can save you a lot of headaches, especially if you’re trying to keep your luggage light!
The majority of airlines will allow only one checked bag, and while that might be fine for a short trip, if you’re staying longer or you’re someone who prefers a different outfit every day, it might feel a bit limiting.
What to wear in Morocco will vary depending on where you’re going and the time of year. The clothing you’d wear in Marrakech might be different from what you’ll need for the Sahara or the Atlas Mountains. Having spent plenty of time in Morocco throughout the year, these tips will help you feel prepared and comfortable, no matter where your trip takes you.
Should men be mindful of what they wear in Morocco?
Yes! Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country, and though you’ll see a variety of clothing styles, it’s best to lean towards modesty. While men have a bit more flexibility than women, it’s still a good idea to leave tank tops and very short shorts for the beach or pool.
Packing lightweight, breathable clothing is essential, especially for the summer months. Consider shirts that cover your shoulders and longer shorts or lightweight pants when you’re out and about in cities or rural areas.
Is there a “Morocco dress code” for men?
Not exactly, but it’s still important to dress in a way that respects the culture. While Morocco doesn’t have laws regulating how men (or women) should dress, locals in rural areas tend to dress more conservatively.
In bigger cities like Marrakech and Casablanca, you’ll find locals in everything from jeans and t-shirts to traditional robes. However, in more rural parts of Morocco, dressing more modestly and covering your shoulders and knees is respectful.
Wearing long shorts or lightweight pants with t-shirts will keep you comfortable and respectful. When in doubt, err on the side of modesty—especially when visiting religious sites or rural communities.
Stop stressing wondering what you SHOULD know and let me tell you what you NEED to know!
Can I wear shorts in Morocco?
Yes, you can, but keep the length in mind. While no one is going to stop you from wearing shorts, longer shorts (around the knee) tend to be more accepted in Morocco. They’re more common in beach towns and coastal cities. If you’re hiking or doing outdoor activities, opt for loose-fitting, lightweight pants as they’ll keep you cooler and more protected from the sun.
Is it ok to wear jeans in Morocco?
Absolutely. Jeans are common in Morocco, and you’ll see plenty of men wearing them. They’re great for cities and casual outings. However, if you’re traveling in the summer or visiting desert areas, you might want to switch to lighter fabrics. Morocco can get very hot, and you’ll likely be more comfortable in breathable, loose-fitting pants or shorts.
What about workout wear?
If you plan on going for a run or working out, you can bring your workout gear, but it’s best to stick to more modest options. Opt for longer shorts or leggings if you’re running outside, especially in the older parts of cities. If you’re working out at your hotel or riad, anything goes!
What’s the weather like in Morocco for men packing?
Morocco has a varied climate, so it depends on where and when you’re visiting. In the summer, cities like Marrakech can reach over 100°F, while winters in the mountains can be cold and even snowy. The desert has scorching days and chilly nights, so layers are your friend. Bring a mix of lightweight clothing for the heat and a few layers for the cooler nights or when you’re in the mountains.

What if I’m visiting during Ramadan?
During Ramadan, you’ll notice that Moroccans dress more conservatively. While it’s not required for visitors to change their wardrobe drastically, dressing a bit more modestly can show respect for the local culture. Wearing longer sleeves and pants, or just covering up a bit more than usual, will help you blend in and avoid drawing unwanted attention.
What’s the best way to stay cool in Morocco’s summer?
While you might think wearing as little as possible is the way to go in the Moroccan heat, you’d be surprised how much cooler you’ll feel in loose-fitting, breathable clothing that covers your skin. This not only protects you from the sun but also helps you stay cooler in the shade. Light, long-sleeved shirts and linen or cotton pants are great choices.

Maybe add merino wool t-shirts (short and long sleeve)? They work for all seasons. Great for layering, don’t smell like poly does, easy to dress up or down.
