Moroccan Boho Macrame Rainbow Craft

Moroccan Boho Macrame Rainbow Craft

If you’re a fan of rainbows, you’re not going to want to miss out on this macrame rainbow craft. It’s a simple project that results in a really cute piece of Moroccan boho decor for your home. In just a few moments of time, you’ll have a beautiful DIY macrame rainbow to hang up and show off to all your family and friends. Just be ready, they might be asking you to make one for them, too!

Woven wall hangings are really quite lovely. They’re not only beautiful focal points to have in a room but they’re such a great conversation piece as well. You may have seen them on Etsy or other similar websites selling for upwards of $100 EACH but you can make your own!

The other great aspect of this fun Moroccan boho craft is that you can easily alter it to fit whatever color scheme you have going on in your home. Plus, the kids can easily join in on the fun, too! This is actually a wonderful family Moroccan arts and craft project that everyone can sit down and make together.

What is macrame?

If you’re new to the macrame world and intrigued by it, welcome! It’s important to understand what it is before diving in. Macrame is a form of crafting where knots are used frequently to create many different looks and textures.

You’ve probably seen macrame projects all the time without even realizing it and they’re usually created and hung up on the walls to display as a beautiful piece of art.

Is macrame easy to learn?

Totally easy. People actually stay away from it because they think that it looks overly complicated but that’s just an illusion. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find that it’s a really simple way to be creative and make beautiful art as well.

Can I use regular yarn for macrame?

You can but it’s not going to end up looking the same and it’s not going to be as sturdy. It’s important to use whatever type of rope or textile that is described in the directions.

Since you’re knotting with this craft, you’re going to want to use a sturdy rope that will hold its shape and stay strong to complete the rest of the craft. And don’t worry, once you buy rope, you’ll be using it more and more as it’s not going to go to waste! (Did I mention that making macrame crafts are quite addictive?!)

Supplies needed to make a macrame rainbow craft

This simple macrame craft takes minimal supplies to get started. Just another big perk of this boho style art creation.

  • Naturally twisted rope
  • Hot glue
  • Felt
  • Colorful yarns – 3 to 4 different colors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Items to decorate (flowers or pompoms)

Make certain to help out the kids with the hot glue as it will burn and hurt. Parental supervision is a must for younger children making this project.

Instructions:

Step -1: Decide the number of layers and the size for the macramé rainbow.  Cut out ropes for the macramé rainbow layers. I’m crafting a 3 layered macramé rainbow.

Step -2: Select a yarn and grab a rope to get started. Leave an inch of the rope intact and then tie the yarn strand around the rope and tie a tight knot.

Step – 3: Align the short end of the tied yarn with the rope and the wrap the yarn around the rope neatly.

Step – 4: Continue to wrap the yarn around the rope until reaching the other end, keep in mind to leave 1 inch intact on that end as well. Keep 2 inches yarn on the end and cut off yarn from the bundle. Attach the tapestry needle through the open end of the yarn strand.

Step – 5:  Draw the needle under the wrapped yarn and draw it out randomly by crossing 5 or 6 wraps.

Step – 6: Draw the needle out by pulling the full length of the strand. Cut off extra yarn if required. The yarn wrapping is now secured.

Step – 7: Similarly, wrap the other rope cut-outs with different colored yarns.

Step – 8: Cut out the rainbow base from felt fabric. The size of the base should be slightly smaller than the required macramé rainbow size.

Step – 9: Use hot glue gun to attach either the bottom or the top rainbow strand (rope).

Step – 10: One by one attach all 3 yarn wrapped ropes on the felt rainbow base.

Step – 11: You can keep the macramé rainbow simple or add some embellishments such as felt flowers or pompoms. Also, attach a hanging mechanism on the backside of the rainbow. Cut out a small rope and form a loop with it. Attach the open ends of the rope on the top-backside of the macramé rainbow to complete the hanging mechanism.
