When you think of having a refreshing smoothie you may not consider blending orange and banana together. Think again! The refreshing burst of citrus is a match made in heaven with the smooth tropical banana. This smoothie recipe is not only delicious – it’s relatively healthy too (be sure to look at the sugar content of your yoghurt and adjust to suit your needs).
I love to eat oranges on a hot summer day. When your kids have the sniffles, they are a fantastic source of vitamin C. As oranges are full of fiber, antioxidants, potassium, and folate, they really pack a punch when included in smoothie recipes. In my recipe I include the zest of the orange in the smoothie blend, as it adds great flavor and texture. If you are looking at the health benefits of your smoothie ingredients, the orange peel is believed to aid gut health.
Bananas provide a great thick texture when blended with other ingredients – making smoothies a great breakfast alternative or afternoon snack to help keep the sugar cravings at bay. They perform double duty here as they are also full of nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber. By freezing the banana first, it helps create the creamy cold texture for your smoothie, without the need to water the recipe down by adding ice.
I use vanilla yoghurt in my orange banana smoothies as it adds a sweet creaminess to the smoothie. You could substitute for a plain or Greek style yoghurt – these will give a tarter flavor though.
