Food tours are a must wherever we go. We took a food tour with our kids in Barcelona a few years ago before we started our Mediterranean cruise and they loved it. This time it was a chance to show my mom the food of this city with a walking food tour. When Food Lovers Company reached out to me to see if we’d be in Barcelona I said yes and they promptly booked us on a tour.
Our Barcelona Food Tour
Thanks to some miscommunication on my part in the beginning we ended up starting the tour late and this set us behind. Word of wisdom – check and double check your messages! Nuria graciously came and got us and brought us to the actual starting point for our tour. The first stop was a small bodega that serves pinchos, wine and vermouth. This first stop was a thorough walk through of the varieties of hams of the region and a bit further afield. Mom certainly enjoyed this stop! There were other things available but it’s worth noting Spanish cuisine is heavy on pork so if you don’t eat it, communicate this clearly and don’t assume there will be substitutions.
Nuria told us that when they were designing their tour they really wanted to take people where locals eat and shop. There are hundreds (probably thousands) of restaurants in Barcelona and they range from very good to very bad and everything in between. Some of the stops were so secret, the owners of the places don’t want to reveal their shop names! This was the case for this stop that was cheese heaven for me and included a takeaway cone of cheese ice cream – and it was excellent.
Just like sardines, anchovies get a bad rap. I’ve eaten fresh ones before but mom never had and truth be told, she is not a fish lover. These crispy fried anchovies can be eaten head on or off and I tried them both ways – I still prefer heads off! This stop was another very local hole in the wall shop with a very very limited menu. It was all locals and had the vibe of someplace my grandparents would have totally went on a night out. That local!
Our final stop was a newer establishment and a mix of traditional and new dishes. Here we ate croquettes and mussels along with a heavenly dessert I still think about. It was really really busy by the time we left and it was clear this was a popular restaurant.
We enjoyed our night out with Food Lovers Company and having the chance to try unique things. We also walked through a lot of the historical district of the city and that made me want to come back and learn more about the history and architecture nearby. We had plenty to eat for a full meal (and then some). If you have any food allergies or aversions you should reach out to the company ahead of time to see if they are able to accommodate you.
