I travel to eat. I stay home to eat. Basically, my life is about finding the next great thing that makes me happy. That’s just how it goes! So putting together this list of my favorite things I ate last year, and where you too can find and devour them was HARD!
But here it is – 12 of the best things I ate in 2016!
Tasting some of the best riad food in Marrakech? That’s how we spent January. The winner was this seafood b’stilla that explodes with flavor in your mouth. Dreams are made of this.
You can eat it too on our Gourmet Food Tour!
There’s nothing better than Turkish breakfast. NOTHING. This one that I shared with my friend Katie in Istanbul was one of the most memorable meals ever.
You can eat it too at Naga Putrika in Kadikoy, Istanbul, Turkey.
With visitors for much of the month I went to a lot of local restaurants. I love this place for the fun ambiance and great food. When you’re tired of tajine come here!
You can eat this salad too at La Famille in Marrakech, Morocco.
Moroccan dish I hate the most? Chicken tajine with preserved lemons. I know, it’s good but I’ve eaten enough of this over the years that I’ve just lost the taste for it. BUT, this version from Chef Meryem Cherkaoui was fantastic and made me reconsider my loathing of the dish.
You can eat it too at Mes’lalla in Marrakech.
We were in Scandinavia part of this month and tried a lot of new things. But my favorite was a classic. Waffles with homemade strawberry jam and sour cream. I’d take these anyday.
You can eat it too at Vesteras Farm in Geiranger, Norway.
Summer is HOT in Marrakech. I fell in love with this beet gazpacho (and I don’t like beets normally!) with fresh ricotta when I was at the Mandarin Oriental.

Hands down the best thing this month were the tacos I ate in Sedona Arizona with best friend from childhood. I’d been dreaming of a taco pig out for months and this did it!
You can eat it at Tortas de Fuego in Sedona, Arizona
I learned how to make tafernoute in August – my favorite Moroccan bread. Eating this with some olive oil and fresh beldi butter was the highlight of the month.
You can eat this at Kasbah du Toublal in Imlil, Morocco
For US Morocco Food Week I got to eat some amazing food but my favorite was the Salmon Slider with Smoked Salmon “Bacon” from guest chefs Mandy and Kirsten Dixon. I don’t love fish but this was so good. Add a bit of maple syrup, birch syrup or honey to smoked salmon in a pan and cook a fw minutes for the best thing you’ve eaten in a long time.
You’ll have to make this one or MAYBE you can get it if the timing is right at La Baleine Cafe in Homer, Alaska.
I had this big ‘ole bowl of noodles for breakfast my first day in Singapore and I still have dreams of it! I love savory breakfasts and noodles as an option. Sold!
You can eat it too at the Lao Pa Sat Festival Market in Singapore.
At Centara Ras Fushi in the Maldives we made Tom Yum Soup with the sweetest prawns I’ve eaten in a long time. I am trying to track down all the ingredients so we can make it again in Morocco.
You can eat it too at Centara Ras Fushi Resort in the Maldives.
The end of the year ends with a simple dish. Kalinte is made in northern Morocco only from chickpea flour and eggs. It’s a tasty snack especially with cumin and salt sprinkled on top while it’s still hot.
