Me and Sarah

Wednesday was my last day working with Sarah my most awesome personal trainer.  It was so bittersweet.  She’s taking 6 weeks off and when she gets back we’ll be in the final weeks before our move.  Surgery and diet have helped me get part of the way on my fitness journey but, Sarah has been the person who inspired me to go the rest of the way. I can remember one of my first workouts when I was frustrated and almost in tears because it was so hard. I. HATED. IT.  Even though I was paying to work with her, every morning I would think of things that I could say or do to get out of my workout.  That’s been my way of dealing with things my entire life – especially when it comes to exercise.  After the almost tear session she told me “I know this is not fun right now, but it will be eventually – I promise.”  

I thought she was a total liar. This was never going to be fun.  Never.

So why, if I hated this so much, was Wednesday so bittersweet?  First, I’m going to miss her a lot.  She always could move me out of my rut.  She helped me modify things when I was in pain (from my back), and she was the first “fit” person who I never felt an ounce of judgement from. She also never put herself down in front of me. Have you ever had that moment in the gym or even with a group of women, all of whom are visibly very physically fit and/or thin, but they’re absorbed in negative self-talk about “how fat they are” or “how bloated they must look”.  Yea…so the fat chick in the corner (that was me) is left feeling like “wow how can I even show my face around them when every single movement is hard and I AM fat.” I still maintain this, if you’ve never been overweight you have no idea what it’s like to actually be overweight – none.  You might have other issues, and you might not be “fit”, but I have a very hard time not being totally put off by anyone who has been a normal weight or “skinny” their entire life try to tell me what it’s like to be fat.

I never felt judged with Sarah – ever – and I have no doubt that were it not for that I would have quit a long time ago.  But, the end of our training relationship is also happy in many ways.  First, I am at a point where I can do most anything confidently and correctly. I couldn’t do more than 5 push ups when we started. Every single time I went to the gym I could hear the people who teased me daily in school.  I could hear them laughing at me, calling me terrible names, and making sure I knew I didn’t fit their standards. I told myself with every push-up and squat that I was better than that – that it was time for those voices to get out of my head! I can pound out 25 push-ups or more like nothing now. Sarah has taught me what I need to do to be successful and continue my routine in Morocco.  She even made me several workout plans I can take with.  Wednesday she was snapping pictures with my camera during the exercise I hate the most.  I call them “the b**ches” because when we started doing these ugh it was awful.  It’s not bad now, but I love requesting she make sure her group exercise classes get the opportunity to do this exercise that day too.

So now it’s all on me to take care of exercise and my Shaklee products to help with nutrition.  I’ve gotten several emails and messages from people who are looking to lose weight and/or get their health back on track so I’ve got a challenge to share with you.

I’m challenging myself to do 14 days of fitness in a row.

No excuses.

 No judgement.  

If all I can do for that day is walk around the block that’s what’s going to happen.

    This is even more inspiring because i know you. I have watched you through this. Watched, not with an eagle eye and a measuring stick, but rather random notices on random days -that you really have lost weight and are getting healthy. You do inspire me, because I know what I see is real. You are beautiful. Awesome job!

    I am so in! I’m beautiful, but I’m also fat! And group motivation is a blessing. I did my first 5k for the year last week (45 min). 2 weeks will keep me from slacking off. Thanks Amanda!
