How to Take Your Own Walking Tour of Marrakech

Hiring a personal guide when visiting Marrakech isn’t in the cards for everyone. There are several very good ones, but there also many who are simply atrocious and whose only aim is to make as much money as possible via commission of sales. I put together my own walking tour of Marrakech through history some months back that many people have really enjoyed. I even started thinking of some different walks I could create that would allow people to do their own tours. Then I found out about GPSmyCity

What is it?

It’s an easy to use phone app. The app interface includes a map so that you can see where you’ve been and where you’re going. Get the app in the Play store for Android or App store for Apple.

How does it work?

First, you will need to be on wifi or data to download the app and load in the city that you want. Then you can choose the walks that you would like to download. Before purchasing it does give you an overview of the map and the places on the walk so you have some idea how far you’ll be going, how long it takes and what you’ll see. This basic version is available to anyone. You can upgrade for $4.99 for a more in depth features like travel routes, higher resolution maps, the ability to create custom tours and eliminate advertisements. Once you have everything loaded you can go offline. The app will work offline so you don’t need to eat up data or even have wifi available.

How diverse are the offerings?

There are 18 different walks available for Marrakech alone. I find that pretty impressive. I haven’t done all of them so I can’t comment on how different one is from the other but you’re sure to find something that fits your interests. There is quite a bit of overlap on the Marrakech walks which is to be expected a bit as the historical points of interest are limited. Going through the walks did make me think I should create a secret insider custom walk to offer!

Is it worth it?

I think this depends a lot on what kind of traveler you are. A walking tour of Marrakech costs between $40-100 for a day with a guide. Many of the sites he/she will take you to see are included on this app. In other cities it’s likely to be similar. If you’re an independent traveler who wants to hit the highlights and have a little guidance this is a steal. If you’d rather have someone help you get point to point it may not be the best option.

Overall I think this is an interesting tool for anyone who wants to get out and see a city on their own. Try it on your next adventure!

SPECIAL!

GPSmyCity is running a Kickstarter campaign now which is a great deal for my fellow wanderlusters. If you back at the $60 level you’ll get premium access to ALL of their city walks FOREVER! There are currently 750+ walks around the world available and more constantly added. It’s a gift that keeps giving!
