“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
― Leonardo da Vinci
I feel very lucky, but also acknowledge, I have worked very hard to achieve the things in life that I have at this point. There are few things left on my “dream list.” One item however has alluded me for years. From the first time I saw it was possible, I have dreamed of taking a hot air balloon ride over Marrakech. The timing was never right and sadly MarocBaba is not a willing participant. Part of me always dreamed he would arrange it as a surprise for me but I realized this probably wouldn’t happen – because he’s afraid of doing it! So I took matters in my own hands – and you should too when you travel to Marrakech.
Well, with a little help from my friends at Marrakech by Air.
The one down-side of hot air balloon rides is the early wake up call. Flights happen in the early morning, along with the sunrise. Then again that could also can be seen as a good thing. I was picked up at exactly 5:50am and made the rounds with the driver to pick up the other riders, in total there were six of us. We rode about a half-hour from Marrakech to essentially the middle of nowhere – the perfect spot to launch a hot air balloon.
A quick morning snack and cup of coffee was available as they readied the trailer to pull the basket and equipment out.
I wasn’t really sure what to expect, would it be bumpy? Would we get blown around? It felt like I was suspended in the air. We floated over the villages below at around 800-900 meters above the ground. There wasn’t a single second that I felt afraid. But I was in complete awe of the natural beauty that is Morocco. Floating above the expanses is so peaceful! The only thing that might have made it even better was if the mountains were snow-capped. This of course is up to mother nature who hasn’t brought much snow this year.
After our flight we went back to the village where breakfast was waiting. In proper Moroccan fashion a selection of pastries, breads and tea were waiting. Then it was on to the final experience of a small camel ride in the Palmerie. I could have done without the camels, but that’s just me!
Flights are available every day but are highly contingent on weather. The good news is Marrakech has an excellent climate and plentiful calm, clear days making flights possible on a regular basis. Updated prices for adults and children are available on the Marrakech by Air website. The price is all inclusive with the flight, transportation, breakfast and camel ride included. Marrakech by Air is the only hot air balloon company I recommend in Marrakech.
