….in a time of need

I try to focus much of this blog towards recipes and Moroccan culture however I can’t let this issue pass by.  I’m sure that by this point many of you know the suffering that is occuring in Pakistan.  Seeing the images is so heart breaking and it’s hard to even comprehend the numbers.   In listening to an NPR report this morning the figures were 4 to 6 MILLION people homeless due to flooding.  (The NYT reports 8.5 million affected)  Many are stranded and Pakistan has access to only 67 helicopters for support and relief efforts.  For some comparison about 500,000 people were displaced in the Haiti earthquake.  I’m not saying one is more important than the other but it gives some perspective on the gravity of the situation.

Sometimes it’s just too much for us to bear to see suffering on such a large scale.  But this is only the beginning of the suffering.  It’s the middle of monsoon season in Pakistan and more flooding is expected.  Without enough medication and aid getting to the people in need the risk for the outbreak of disease is very real and already occuring.  It’s ironic that with all this water there is a shortage of water that people can drink, causing an increase and potential massive outbreak of cholera.
I know that everyone is suffering in the economy today but I urge you if you can to donate to this cause.
